5 Reasons to Shop Preloved
In case you missed it, shopping preloved is trending! But that’s not why you should start. Embracing preloved is a conscious celebration of style with a story. It's a choice that's good for your wardrobe, your wallet, and the world.
I’ve been shopping preloved for years and my wardrobe is a curated collection of second-hand treasures, complemented by thoughtfully chosen sustainable pieces and pieces I’ve had for years. An eclectic mix of designer pieces, brands I only once dreamt of owning, unique vintage and old faithfuls.
I remember the first time I stumbled on a piece I’d only once lusted over and could now afford. I quickly realised if I was prepared to wait a season or two, I could own those designer items at a fraction of the price. And that is where my passion for preloved started. Now, you don’t even have to wait out the season! Head into a rent-a-rack or consignment store and you’re likely to find the piece there.
Of course for me, it’s now very much about sustainability too, but honestly, it has taught me more about my individual style than I could have imagined.
Here are 5 reasons you should make the shift:
Quality on a Budget
Embracing preloved fashion started as a practical choice for me many years ago. It was the only way I could afford the pieces I really wanted to wear. Over time, I’ve come to appreciate the quality and affordability preloved pieces offer. Looking back, I’m astounded that I used to wait for sales or compromise on pieces I didn’t love just to fit my budget.
I now have a wardrobe featuring some of my favourite designers, pieces that were once unattainable - Isabel Marant, Husk, Anine Bing, Spell, Morrison, Flannel - all pieces purchased for less than a third of their retail price.
Style over Trends
When you shop preloved, your intuition leads the way. It's about discovering pieces that genuinely resonate with you — the colour, the cut, the print, the brand. There's a real thrill in stumbling upon a one-of-a-kind gem that ignites your style, sparks conversation, and tells a story. When you’re only buying new you will inevitably be pushed towards trends, because that’s all that is in store.
Your intuition is more powerful than you think. To start training it: focus on a colour you love to wear, seek out a print or fabric that draws you in. Over time, you'll notice your eye developing — and your style becoming truly your own.
Creativity over Perfection
Once I found my preloved rhythm, I discovered a newfound creativity in how I approached styling my outfits. The pressure of 'getting it right' to match the current trend faded away, replaced by the exploration of how each piece could be uniquely curated to fit my personal style.
Found a piece you love? Bring it home and have a play in your wardrobe, styling it different ways. There’s no right or wrong. Each item is a canvas, waiting for its next chapter. Take the opportunity to be the storyteller.
Fashion with Heart
Whether it's a charity, social enterprise, or small business, the money you spend shopping preloved is generally going back into the community — supporting organisations that not only do meaningful work, but actively divert waste from landfill.
A note on pricing, because it’s such a controversial issue these days! Sometimes you’ll get a bargain, sometimes something might be more than expected. But, before balking at an op shop price tag, consider where your money is going. If a piece will give you years of wear or genuine joy, it's worth it — especially when it's supporting a cause. And if it's not quite right? Maybe that's just helping you make a more mindful decision. Fashion with purpose is a beautiful thing and worth the investment!
The Planet
Every time we choose to extend the life of a garment, we divert waste from landfill and reduce demand on fast, unethical, and unsustainable production. We're already said to have enough clothes in the world to dress the next six generations — the supply is there. The question is how we use it.
If you need a reminder of what's at stake, step outside. The spaces we walk through, the water we swim in, the air we breathe — all of it is affected by the rate at which we continue producing fashion. Shopping preloved is one small, powerful step toward something better.
Making the shift can feel overwhelming at first — but once you do, you'll wonder why you didn't start sooner.
